In 2022, the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC) launched the Jaime Espina Klima Correspondents Fellowship, aiming to provide space for climate and energy stories in Philippine communities by training provincial journalists and media practitioners. The Fellowship offered a six-month story grant, where 14 journalists (seven groups, with one reporter and one editor each) from Luzon and Mindanao were chosen as Fellows, producing seven compelling stories on the energy transition and low-carbon development.
On its second run in 2024, ten teams composed of journalists and visual storytellers from across the Philippines were selected to produce compelling stories that highlight the challenges and opportunities of the country’s transition to renewable energy systems. All stories produced through the Fellowship were published in the respective groups’ media publications and presented on ICSC’s website through “Klima Reports: A Compendium of Stories under the Jaime Espina Klima Correspondents Fellowship.”

On #NationalHeroesDay2023, ICSC celebrates the local climate heroes like the Suludnon, who are at the forefront of the fight against climate change and working to secure a liveable, sustainable future for generations to come. We continue to urge the country’s leaders to commit to and invest in ambitious climate action that supports and protects our most vulnerable, and helps provide a brighter future for every Filipino. On December 2021, Super Typhoon Odette, internationally known as Rai, devastated the provinces of Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands. A year later, Klima Fellows from Philippine Daily Inquirer Erwin Mascariñas and Ivy Marie Mangadlao visited one of the affected villages and documented how solar energy helped the community back on its feet.
