Position Paper on Leveraging the Data Centers Opportunity

The Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC) formally submits this position paper to underscore that synergistic planning between energy and digital infrastructure sectors is crucial as the demand for data centers surge in the Philippines.

The demand for data centers is booming, fueled by exponential data growth and the rise of artificial intelligence. While this surge strains power grids worldwide, the Philippines can transform the challenge into a catalyst for industrialization by strategically pairing data centers with untapped renewables such as offshore wind and rooftop solar. This rapid growth poses a critical challenge for the power sector, as data centers already consume massive amounts of electricity and are expected to further strain the already burdened grids. Concurrently, a powerful global shift is underway: the push to power these facilities with renewable energy is gaining momentum, with major data center operators now actively decarbonizing to meet net-zero commitments. While these trends highlight the challenges of powering data centers, the Philippines has an opportunity to turn this demand into a driver of industrialization and economic growth.
