The Jaime Espina Klima Correspondents Fellowship is the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities’ tribute to our dear friend, veteran journalist and committed activist Nonoy Espina, who dedicated many years developing the skills and capacity of fellow journalists, especially in regions outside of Metro Manila.
In and out of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, Nonoy also worked for the protection and safety of his peers, and for improvements to their work conditions.
But his tasks did not stop with journalism.
Nonoy used his skills in media work to serve vulnerable communities as they battled environmental and governance challenges and injustices that trapped so many in poverty.
As citizen Nonoy, he immersed himself in these communities, going beyond reportage to show solidarity with their struggles.
Our fellowship honors his memory with grants to teams of journalists covering under-reported stories in energy problems and successes in several provinces.
In providing knowledge and logistical aids to Nonoy’s passionate, talented peers, our fellowship hopes to support their drive for excellence, one attuned to the needs of their home communities.
Here’s a toast to Nonoy, and to all the hell-raisers in the media who continue to persevere under great odds, to “comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable”.
